Are You Required to Have a Fishing License in Ontario if You’re Over 65 in 2024?

As an avid angler in Ontario, you may be wondering about the fishing license requirements for seniors aged 65 and older in 2024. The good news is that if you fall into this age group, you do not need to purchase an Outdoors Card or a fishing license to enjoy your favorite pastime. However, there are a few important details to keep in mind.

Fishing Without a License for Seniors in Ontario

According to the Ontario government’s fishing regulations summary, Canadian residents who are 65 years of age or older are exempt from needing to purchase an Outdoors Card and recreational fishing license. Instead, you can carry a government-issued identification card that includes your name and date of birth, and use it as a deemed license to fish.

This means that as a senior angler, you can head out to your favorite fishing spot without the hassle of obtaining a separate fishing license. The catch and possession limits that apply to a sport fishing license will still be in effect, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the regulations for the specific body of water you plan to fish in.

Purchasing a Fishing License for Seniors

While seniors over 65 are not required to purchase a fishing license, you have the option to do so if you wish. If you choose to buy a license, you will need to obtain an Outdoors Card first. The Outdoors Card is a plastic identification card that is valid for three calendar years.

Once you have your Outdoors Card, you can purchase a fishing license that is valid for either one or three calendar years. The cost of the license will depend on whether you choose a conservation license (with reduced catch limits) or a sport license (with normal catch limits).

Purchasing a fishing license as a senior is a great way to support the management of fish and wildlife populations in Ontario. Your fees will contribute to the ongoing efforts to maintain healthy ecosystems and ensure that future generations can enjoy the same fishing opportunities that you do.

Fishing with Companions

If you choose to fish with companions who are not seniors, it’s important to note that they will need to have a valid fishing license if they plan to engage in fishing activities. The catch and possession limits for their license will apply to any fish they catch, regardless of whether they are fishing alongside a senior angler.

It’s also worth mentioning that non-Canadian residents who are 65 years of age or older are generally required to purchase an Outdoors Card and recreational fishing license to fish in Ontario. The same rules apply to non-Canadian residents of any age, with a few exceptions for youth under 18 who are accompanied by a licensed angler.

Enjoying Your Fishing Adventures in 2024

As a senior angler in Ontario, you have the freedom to enjoy your fishing adventures in 2024 without the need for a separate fishing license. Whether you choose to fish on your own or with companions, you can relax and focus on the joys of the sport, secure in the knowledge that you are fishing within the guidelines set by the Ontario government.

Remember to always practice responsible fishing by following the catch and possession limits, using proper catch-and-release techniques when necessary, and respecting the natural environment. With these considerations in mind, you can look forward to many happy hours spent fishing in the beautiful waters of Ontario in 2024 and beyond.
