Can Integral Blinds Between Glass Be Repaired? The Surprising Truth

When it comes to integral blinds sealed between glass panes, the news is not always good for homeowners looking to repair them. The reality is that most doors and windows sold today with built-in blinds are not easily repairable. To access the blinds for repair, the entire thermal glass assembly must be disassembled, rendering the unit unusable.

The Challenges of Repairing Integral Blinds

Integral blinds, also known as between-glass blinds or in-glass blinds, are a popular choice for their convenience and clean appearance. They are sealed between two or more panes of glass, protecting them from dust and damage. However, this very feature that makes them attractive also makes them difficult to repair.

When an integral blind becomes damaged or stops functioning properly, the entire glass unit must be removed and taken to a factory for repair or replacement. This is because the blinds are an integral part of the double-glazed unit, sealed between the panes of glass during the manufacturing process.

Removing the glass unit is a complex process that involves cutting, cleaning, polishing, and ensuring the inside surfaces are dust-free. After these steps, the glass panes are assembled around a spacer bar that provides insulation and a hermetic seal. Incorporating an integral blind into this production process makes it challenging to repair them later on.

Common Issues with Integral Blinds

While integral blinds are generally reliable and can provide years of trouble-free operation, there are a few common issues that may arise:

  • Damage from misuse or abuse, such as forcing the magnetic slider or cords
  • Failure of the motor in motorized blinds
  • General wear and tear over time

In most cases, if an integral blind is damaged or malfunctioning, the entire glass unit must be replaced. Experienced glass manufacturers and integral blind providers may be able to dismantle the existing unit, repair or replace the blind, and reassemble it using the original glass and some parts. However, this is not always possible and depends on the nature and extent of the damage.

Reliability and Warranties

Integral blinds are generally reliable, with most manufacturers offering a minimum five-year warranty. However, some homeowners may be concerned about the reliability of these blinds after the warranty period has expired.

When used and fitted correctly, integral blinds can provide many years of service. Motorized blinds may be considered more reliable because the motor operation keeps the lifting and lowering action consistent. Manually operated blinds are also continually assessed for reliability, with features like snagless designs and smooth-gliding slats contributing to their durability.

It’s important to note that while integral blinds may not be as easily repairable as other types of blinds, they are designed to be highly reliable and long-lasting. With proper use and care, many homeowners can enjoy their integral blinds for years to come.
