Can You Bypass a Sump Pump Float Switch?

If your sump pump is not turning on and off properly, you may need to replace the float switch. However, before taking that step, there’s an easier option: bypassing the existing float switch. This method allows you to test the pump separately and can be a quick fix if the switch is malfunctioning.

How to Bypass a Sump Pump Float Switch

To bypass the float switch, follow these steps:

Run the sump pump until all the water is removed from the basin, then disconnect the power.
Bypass the circuit on the original float switch and use silicone sealant to thoroughly seal the housing.
Loosely attach the replacement switch to the pump housing with a zip tie.
Plug the switch into the outlet and plug the bypass plug into the switch.
Fill the basin with water and adjust the replacement switch attachment point so the pump turns on at the correct water level.
Tighten the zip tie to secure the new float switch.

By bypassing the existing switch, you can test the pump separately to determine if the issue lies with the switch or the pump itself. This method is often easier than replacing the float switch entirely.

When to Replace a Sump Pump Float Switch

If the bypass method doesn’t resolve the issue, it may be necessary to replace the float switch. Signs that a float switch needs to be replaced include:

The sump pump doesn’t turn on or off as it should
The switch appears broken or damaged
The switch is stuck in one position
Debris or lack of maintenance has caused the switch to malfunction

To replace the float switch, follow the steps outlined in the bypass method, but instead of bypassing the switch, remove it completely and install a new one. Be sure to seal the housing thoroughly with silicone sealant to prevent water damage and ensure the switch is securely attached to the pump housing.
