Using Toothpaste to Fix Scratched CDs

One surprisingly effective solution is to use a simple household item – toothpaste. The abrasive properties in toothpaste can help buff out minor scratches on the surface of a CD. Start by applying a small amount of plain, white toothpaste to a soft, lint-free cloth. Gently rub the toothpaste into the scratch in a circular motion, then rinse the CD with warm water and dry it thoroughly.

Filling Scratches with Wax

For deeper scratches, a wax-based solution may be the answer. Products like car wax, furniture wax, or even petroleum jelly can be rubbed into the scratches to fill them in and create a smooth surface. Apply a small amount of the wax to a clean, soft cloth and gently rub it into the scratch in a radial motion. Wipe away any excess wax, and your CD should be good as new – at least temporarily, as the wax may degrade over time.

Other Scratch Removal Techniques

If toothpaste and wax don’t do the trick, you can also try using a mild abrasive compound like Brasso or 3M rubbing compound. Apply a small amount to a cloth and gently buff the scratches. Just be sure to work in a well-ventilated area, as the fumes can be irritating.

No matter which method you choose, it’s important to handle your CDs with care to prevent future scratches. Store them in their original cases, avoid touching the shiny underside, and be gentle when inserting and removing them from your player.
