Do I Need a Fishing License for Saltwater Fishing in North Carolina in 2024?

If you plan to go fishing in the saltwater or coastal areas of North Carolina in 2024, it’s important to understand the state’s fishing license requirements. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll answer the question “Do I need a fishing license for saltwater fishing in North Carolina?” and provide you with all the information you need to legally enjoy your fishing adventures in the Tar Heel State.

Understanding North Carolina’s Fishing License Types

North Carolina offers two main types of fishing licenses: Inland and Coastal. The Inland license covers freshwater fishing, while the Coastal license is required for saltwater fishing. However, there are some exceptions and additional considerations to keep in mind.

Joint waters, where fresh and saltwater meet, are usually covered by either license, but it’s always best to check the specific regulations for the area you plan to fish. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission provides helpful maps to determine the boundaries of these different water designations.

In addition to the basic licenses, North Carolina also offers short-term licenses for those who only plan to fish for a limited time, as well as lifetime licenses for anglers who want to fish for years to come.

Who Needs a Coastal Recreational Fishing License?

As of January 1, 2007, any individual 16 years or older who wants to recreationally finfish in any water designated as coastal or joint waters of North Carolina must purchase a NC Coastal Recreational Fishing License (CRFL). This requirement applies to both residents and non-residents of the state.

However, there are a few exceptions to this rule:

  • Children under 16 years of age do not need a fishing license.
  • Passengers aboard a licensed saltwater charter or head boat do not need a separate fishing license.
  • North Carolina residents on leave from the military can fish for up to 30 days without a license, as long as they carry their military ID and leave papers.

It’s important to note that even if you are assisting someone else with fishing, such as baiting hooks or setting the drag, you also need a valid fishing license.

Where to Purchase a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License

There are several convenient ways to purchase a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License:

  • Online: You can complete your application online using Visa or MasterCard. This method includes a $2 transaction fee.
  • By phone: Call 888-248-6834 to get your license over the phone. Working hours are 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. Monday through Friday.
  • In person: Visit a registered vendor, such as many tackle shops, hardware stores, and chains like Walmart, to buy your license instantly.

If you purchase your license in person, you’ll receive it immediately. For online and phone purchases, your license will be mailed to you. However, you can still fish while waiting for your license to arrive by providing your license number and a form of ID.

It’s important to remember that you must carry your fishing license with you while fishing once it arrives.

Free and Reduced-Fee Licenses

North Carolina offers free Unified Lifetime Fishing Licenses to certain groups, including:

  • North Carolina residents who rely on fishing for food.
  • North Carolina residents who are legally blind.
  • Residents in North Carolina care homes.

Additionally, Unified Lifetime Fishing Licenses are available at a discounted price of $11 plus a $2 processing fee for people with physical disabilities, such as:

  • Residents who are permanently and totally disabled.
  • Resident veterans who are 50% or more disabled.

If you lose your fishing license, you can print and fill out a form to request a replacement. The administrative fee for a lifetime license replacement is $1, while for all other licenses, the fee is $7.

Remember, it’s your responsibility as an angler to be aware of and comply with North Carolina’s fishing license requirements. Failure to possess a valid license can result in fines and other penalties.

By understanding the different types of fishing licenses available in North Carolina and where to purchase them, you can enjoy your saltwater fishing adventures in the state with peace of mind, knowing that you are fishing legally and responsibly.
