Do I Need a Fishing License in Arkansas Right Now?

As the sun rises over the tranquil waters of Arkansas, many anglers are eager to cast their lines and reel in the catch of the day. But before you embark on your fishing adventure, a crucial question lingers: do you need a fishing license in Arkansas right now?

The answer is a resounding yes, if you are 16 or older. According to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, anyone aged 16 or above must carry a valid Arkansas fishing license to take or attempt to take fish and frogs in the state, unless you are fishing in a licensed “put-and-take” pay lake.

Fishing License Options

Arkansas offers various fishing license options to cater to different needs and demographics. For instance, seniors aged 65 or older can enjoy the privileges of the resident Sportsman’s License, which includes fishing, at a discounted rate. Active and retired military personnel, disabled residents, and non-residents also have special license options available.

Non-residents can opt for the Non-Resident Annual Fishing License, which entitles them to fish the waters of Arkansas with sport fishing tackle. However, they must also purchase a Non-Resident Trout Permit to retain trout or fish in certain waters.

Guides and charter operators can obtain the Non-Resident Guide License Fishing, which allows them to guide, aid, or assist others for pay or other consideration in the taking of fish.

Where to Purchase Your Fishing License

Obtaining a fishing license in Arkansas is a straightforward process. You can purchase your license online, at Arkansas Game and Fish Commission regional offices, nature centers, sporting goods stores, certain discount chains, boat docks, or by phone at (501) 223-6349 or 800-364-GAME (4263) between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Remember, all fishing licenses expire one year from the date of purchase and are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you plan to fish for trout in certain waters, you may need an additional permit, so be sure to check the 2024 Arkansas Trout Fishing Guidebook for more information.

Plan Your Fishing Trip

Arkansas boasts an abundance of fishing spots, with 332 public fishing areas scattered throughout the state. You can explore the best lakes, rivers, bayous, ponds, and parks, each with its own detailed interactive map. The state is divided into six geographical regions, each offering unique fishing experiences and attractions.

For a more comfortable and luxurious fishing adventure, consider staying at an Arkansas fishing resort, which offers amenities like lodging with a private fireplace, luxury log cabins, and jacuzzis.

Before you head out, don’t forget to prepare for the 2024 fishing season by downloading the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s 2024 Arkansas Fishing Guide. This comprehensive guide provides valuable information on possession and size limits, equipment, regulation changes, and more.

Lastly, if you plan to operate a powerboat, sailboat, or personal watercraft, be sure to take the mandatory boater education course, which is offered free in a classroom setting or online for a fee of $29.95.
