Do I Need a Fishing License to Fish for Sea Trout in the UK and Ireland?

Fishing for sea trout is a popular pastime in the UK and Ireland, but it’s important to understand the licensing requirements before casting your line. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the regulations surrounding sea trout fishing licenses in both countries, helping you navigate the legal landscape and ensure you’re fishing responsibly.

Fishing Licenses in the UK

In England and Wales, you need a rod fishing license to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, smelt, or eel with a rod and line. This includes sea trout. The license covers fishing in England (except the River Tweed), Wales, and the Border Esk region of Scotland.

There are two main types of licenses available in the UK:

  • Salmon & Sea Trout License: This license allows you to fish for salmon, sea trout, non-migratory trout, and all freshwater fish. You can use up to 3 rods for freshwater fish or 1-2 rods for salmon and sea trout, depending on the location.
  • Trout & Coarse License: If you’re not targeting salmon or sea trout but want to fish for trout and coarse fish in freshwater, you’ll need this license. It covers you for up to 2 rods.

License fees vary based on the duration and type of license. For example, a 12-month Salmon & Sea Trout License costs £86.10, while a 12-month Trout & Coarse License is £33.

Children under 13 do not need a license, and licenses for those aged 13-16 are free.

Fishing Licenses in Ireland

In Ireland, anglers are legally required to possess a license when fishing for salmon or sea trout. Licenses can be purchased online or from various sources, including fishing tackle shops, Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) offices, and some fisheries.

The main types of salmon licenses available in Ireland are:

  • Annual License: Covers fishing in all districts for 12 months. Costs €100 for adults and €10 for juveniles under 18.
  • One District Annual License: Allows fishing in a single district for 12 months. Costs €64.
  • 21-Day License: Covers fishing in all districts for 21 days. Costs €50.
  • 1-Day License: Permits fishing in all districts for 1 day. Costs €36.

In addition to a license, anglers may need a fishing permit, which is obtained separately from the fishery owner. Permit costs vary but generally range from €20 to €50 per day.

It’s important to note that having a salmon license does not automatically grant you the right to fish. You must also obtain permission from the landowner or whoever holds the fishing rights.

Other Considerations

When fishing for sea trout in the UK and Ireland, be aware of the following additional regulations and considerations:

  • Bag Limits: In Ireland, there is an angling bag limit of 10 salmon (any size) or sea trout (over 40 cm) on rivers where you may catch and keep salmon.
  • Catch and Release: Some areas may have mandatory catch and release regulations for sea trout.
  • Fishing Methods: In Ireland, it is illegal to use live fish as bait or to use more than two rods at a time.
  • Closed Seasons: Most fisheries in Ireland close on September 30th each year, with some closing between September 15th and October 12th.

It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the specific regulations and restrictions in the area where you plan to fish, as they may vary based on location and fishery.

Obtaining the proper licenses and permits, understanding the regulations, and fishing responsibly are essential for a successful and legal sea trout fishing experience in the UK and Ireland.
