Do I Need a Saltwater Fishing License in New Jersey for 2024?

As an angler planning a fishing trip to the Garden State, it’s crucial to understand the licensing requirements for saltwater fishing in New Jersey. While the state does not require a general saltwater fishing license, there are specific permits and registrations that anglers must obtain to fish legally in marine waters.

The New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry Program

One of the most important things to know is that all saltwater anglers aged 16 and older must register with the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry Program. This free annual registration serves as a contact list for survey purposes and helps the state gather better recreational fishing data.

Anglers can register online at the official website, saltwaterregistry.nj.gov. Failure to register can result in fines of $25 for a first offense and $50 for subsequent offenses. In 2022, there were 138,607 individuals and 732 for-hire vessels registered with the program.

Saltwater Fishing Licenses and Permits

While there are no general saltwater fishing licenses in New Jersey, there are a few specific licenses and permits required for certain activities:

Shellfish License: Required for harvesting all species of benthic mollusks. Prices range from $2 for a Resident Senior Lifetime Recreational License to $250 for a Non-Resident Commercial License.
Commercial Licenses: Residents can obtain a Commercial License for $50, while Non-Residents pay $250.

It’s important to note that these licenses and permits are separate from the Saltwater Recreational Registry and must be obtained in addition to the free registration.

Fishing on Private Lakes and Waters

When it comes to privately owned lakes and other waters, the same rules apply. Anglers must still register with the Saltwater Recreational Registry Program if they plan to fish in marine waters. However, private landowners may have their own rules and regulations regarding fishing on their property.

It’s always a good idea to check with the property owner or manager before fishing on private waters to ensure compliance with any additional requirements.

Regulations and Restrictions

In addition to the licensing and registration requirements, anglers must also be aware of the specific regulations and restrictions for saltwater fishing in New Jersey:

Minimum Size Limits: Many species have minimum size requirements that anglers must adhere to.
Possession Limits: There are limits on the number of fish that can be kept per angler or vessel.
Seasonal Closures: Some species have closed seasons during which fishing is prohibited.

Anglers can find detailed information on the current regulations on the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife website or in the annual Fishing Digest.

Saltwater fishing in New Jersey offers a diverse array of species and opportunities for anglers of all skill levels. By understanding the licensing requirements, registrations, and regulations, anglers can enjoy a successful and legal fishing experience in the Garden State.
