Do You Need a Fishing License in Florida in 2024? Your Guide to Staying Legal

Fishing is a beloved pastime for many in the Sunshine State, but before you cast your line, it’s crucial to understand the fishing license requirements in Florida. In 2024, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has specific regulations in place to ensure responsible fishing practices and protect the state’s aquatic resources.

Who Needs a Fishing License in Florida?

According to the FWC, both Florida residents and visitors are required to possess a valid Florida hunting, freshwater fishing, or saltwater fishing license when engaged in fishing activities. This applies to anyone attempting to take fish, whether they plan to keep their catch or practice catch-and-release.

The license requirement extends to those assisting in the take of fish, such as setting decoys, calling birds, or baiting hooks. Even if you’re not actively fishing, if you’re participating in the process of catching fish, you must have the appropriate license.

Types of Fishing Licenses in Florida

Florida offers several types of fishing licenses to cater to different needs and preferences:

Annual Freshwater Fishing License: $17.00
5-year Freshwater Fishing License: $79.00
Annual Saltwater Fishing License: $17.00 for residents, $47.00 for non-residents
3-day Non-Resident Saltwater License: $17.00
7-day Non-Resident Saltwater License: $30.00

Florida residents can also purchase combination licenses that include both saltwater and freshwater fishing privileges, as well as hunting licenses.

Exemptions from Fishing License Requirements

While most anglers need a fishing license, there are some exemptions:

Youth under 16 years of age
Florida residents age 65 or older with proof of age and residency
Florida residents fishing within their county of residence with live or natural bait, using poles or lines not equipped with a fishing line retrieval mechanism
Individuals fishing from a for-hire vessel (guide, charter, party boat) that has a valid charter license
Those fishing from a vessel whose operator has a valid recreational saltwater vessel license
Individuals fishing from a pier with a valid saltwater pier license

It’s important to note that while these individuals may be exempt from fishing license requirements, they may still need to obtain specific permits, such as the State Reef Fish Angler Designation or the Shore-Based Shark Fishing Permit.

Where to Purchase a Fishing License in Florida

Fishing licenses in Florida can be purchased through several convenient methods:

Online: Visit GoOutdoorsFlorida.com or use the Fish Hunt FL app
In Person: Purchase from a licensed agent, tax collector’s office, or by phone using 888-FISH-FLORIDA

When purchasing a license, keep in mind that there may be an additional issuance fee of $0.50. All license fees are non-refundable.

Importance of Fishing Regulations

Florida’s fishing regulations are designed to protect the state’s fish populations and ensure the sustainability of its aquatic resources. By following these regulations and obtaining the necessary licenses and permits, anglers can enjoy fishing while contributing to the conservation efforts of the FWC.

Responsible fishing practices, such as adhering to size limits, bag limits, and closed seasons, are crucial for maintaining healthy fish populations. Anglers should familiarize themselves with the specific regulations for the species they plan to target and the area they intend to fish.
