Do You Need a Fishing License in Grand Cayman in 2024?

If you’re planning a fishing trip to the Cayman Islands in 2024, you might be wondering if you need a fishing license. The good news is that you most likely won’t need to worry about getting a fishing license, whether you’re a resident or a visitor. According to the Cayman Islands Department of Environment, there is currently no requirement to obtain a fishing license in the Cayman Islands.

However, it’s important to note that while a fishing license is not necessary, there are certain rules and restrictions in place that anglers must follow. These regulations aim to protect the delicate marine ecosystem and ensure sustainable fishing practices.

Fishing Rules and Regulations in the Cayman Islands

Before you cast your line in the Cayman Islands, familiarize yourself with the local fishing rules and regulations. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Spearfishing of any kind is prohibited for non-Caymanians, and importing any kind of spearing device is illegal.
There are minimum size restrictions in place, which means that only fish longer than eight inches (8″ or 20cm) nose-to-tail may be kept.
Certain species, such as Goliath Grouper (Jew fish), Tilefish (whities), Filefish (pipers), Angelfish, sharks, and rays, are completely protected and may not be taken at any time.
Nassau Grouper season is closed from December 1st to April 30th. During the open season, groupers must be a minimum of 16 inches and a maximum of 24 inches long, with a daily limit of 5 per person or 5 per boat.
Catching turtles or taking turtle eggs is prohibited.
