As the weather warms up and the ice thaws, anglers across Connecticut are eager to cast their lines and enjoy the state’s abundant marine fishing opportunities. However, before you can drop a hook in the water, it’s crucial to understand the licensing requirements for saltwater fishing in Connecticut in 2024.
According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), anyone age 16 or older fishing (taking or attempting to take fish or bait species) from shore or from a boat in the marine district of this state or landing marine fish or bait species in Connecticut taken from offshore waters is required to have a saltwater fishing license.
This regulation applies to both residents and non-residents of Connecticut. The marine district includes Long Island Sound, its embayments, and the Pawcatuck River.
Connecticut offers several types of saltwater fishing licenses to accommodate different needs and preferences:
– **Marine Waters Fishing License**: Required for anyone 16 years of age or older fishing from shore or from a boat in the marine district or landing marine fish or bait species in Connecticut taken from offshore waters.
– **1-Day Marine Fishing License**: Available for Connecticut residents age 16 or 17 for $3, and for residents age 18 and older for $5.
– **3-Day Consecutive Marine Fishing License**: Available for non-residents for $8.
– **Personal Use Lobster License**: Required for persons taking lobsters for their own use by up to 10 pots or SCUBA, at a cost of $60.
– **Personal Use Gillnet License for Menhaden**: Required for persons taking menhaden with a single gill net not more than 60 feet in length, for personal use from marine waters only, at a cost of $100.
There are a few categories of anglers who don’t need to pay for their saltwater fishing licenses, but will still need to get one:
– **Intellectually Disabled or Blind**: With proof of disability provided by a licensed specialist in CT, blind anglers or those with an intellectual disability can purchase a free license for Marine waters.
– **Physically Disabled**: Any CT resident or visitor* with the loss of a limb or the loss of the use of a limb and a doctor’s certificate can get a Connecticut saltwater fishing license free of charge.
– **Senior Lifetime Fishing License**: All residents aged 65 and over can get a free fishing license for Marine waters.
Additionally, each year, two dates are designated as “free fishing license days,” out of which any angler can choose one and fish license-free.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, DEEP offices are closed to the public. However, you can purchase your saltwater fishing license through the DEEP’s Online Outdoor Licensing System, as well as from retail agents and many town clerks.
If you’re unable to print your license, make sure you have a copy ready to be displayed on your mobile device.
Fishing regulations help protect and preserve fish populations in Connecticut’s marine waters. It’s important for every angler to check the current set of regulations before each fishing trip, as they are updated regularly and vary by season or month.
By following the rules and purchasing the necessary licenses, anglers can do their part in ensuring the sustainability of Connecticut’s marine fisheries for generations to come.
