Do You Need a Saltwater Fishing License in Maine in 2024?

Fishing in Maine’s saltwater is a popular pastime for both residents and visitors alike. However, before you cast your line, it’s important to understand the state’s regulations regarding saltwater fishing licenses. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the requirements, exemptions, and how to obtain a saltwater fishing license in Maine for the year 2024.

Saltwater Fishing License Requirements in Maine

In Maine, a person is required to register with the state annually in order to engage in recreational saltwater fishing, unless they meet one of the exemptions. This registration is known as the Maine Saltwater Recreational Fishing Registry, and it is designed to help the state manage and conserve its marine resources.

The registration process is relatively simple and can be done online, by mail, or in person at various locations throughout the state. The cost for the registration is $1, with the exception of registering through a Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife appointed license agent, which costs $2.

Exemptions from the Saltwater Fishing Registry

While most anglers are required to register, there are several exemptions to the Maine Saltwater Recreational Fishing Registry:

Anglers under 16 years of age
Holders of a valid Maine freshwater fishing license (not a Lifetime License)
Holders of a valid Maine commercial fishing license
Maine residents fishing on Memorial Day weekend, July 4th, or Labor Day weekend
Members of the Passamaquoddy Tribe, Penobscot Nation, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, or Aroostook Band of Micmacs
Passengers on a for-hire vessel (charter or head/party boat) captained by an individual with a valid recreational saltwater fishing Operator’s License
Anglers fishing from a dock, pier, or wharf owned by someone with a valid recreational saltwater fishing Operator’s License
Anglers renting a smelt fishing camp from someone with a valid recreational saltwater fishing Operator’s License
Anglers registered or licensed to engage in saltwater recreational fishing in another state or with the National Registry

It’s important to note that if your Maine freshwater fishing license is a Lifetime License, you are not covered for saltwater fishing and will need to check if you qualify for any of the other exemptions.

Saltwater Fishing Licenses in Other New England States

While Maine has its own saltwater fishing registry, other New England states have their own licensing requirements:

Massachusetts: Required for anyone 16-59 years old, $10. Free for those over 60.
New Hampshire: $11
Rhode Island: Reciprocal with Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Maine
