As families venture to the outdoors this spring, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife reminds parents that youths between the ages of 12 and 17 need a license if they plan to hunt, fish, or shellfish in 2024.
According to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), children younger than 12 years old do not need a license to fish or shellfish in Oregon. However, young anglers from 12 to 17 years old need a $10 Youth License, which includes fishing, hunting, shellfishing licenses, and the Columbia River Basin Endorsement.
The ODFW recently updated its regulations, and since March 2016, kids now need a fishing license at age 12. Previously, the age requirement was 14. The new $10 Youth License makes it more affordable for young anglers to enjoy fishing in Oregon.
You can purchase an Oregon youth fishing license online through the ODFW website or at an ODFW license vendor. Here’s how to buy a license online:
Log into the ODFW electronic licensing system from the MyODFW.com website and click on the “Buy a license” button.
Verify or create an account if you haven’t already.
Select “Fishing” from the list of available categories and choose the “Youth License (12-17)” option.
Proceed to checkout and select your preferred delivery method (paper or electronic).
Remember, in addition to the youth fishing license, all anglers, regardless of age, need a valid Combined Angling Tag to fish for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, or halibut in Oregon. Everyone also needs a Columbia River Basin Endorsement if they plan to angle for salmon, steelhead, or sturgeon in part of the Columbia River.
There are certain circumstances in which a youth fishing license is not required in Oregon:
Children younger than 12 years old do not need a license to fish or shellfish.
Disabled veterans and active members of the armed services may be eligible for free or discounted licenses.
Seniors (70 years old and older) who have been Oregon residents for at least 5 years may qualify for a Senior Angling License or Senior Combination License at a reduced cost.
Oregon has its own set of fishing laws and regulations that need to be followed to protect the state’s fish populations. As responsible anglers, it’s important for youth and adults alike to familiarize themselves with these regulations and practice catch-and-release techniques when appropriate.
By purchasing a youth fishing license and following the rules, young anglers in Oregon can enjoy the sport while contributing to the conservation of the state’s aquatic resources. The $10 Youth License makes it affordable for more kids to experience the joys of fishing and develop a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors.
