How Much Does a California Fishing License Cost in 2024?

As the weather warms up in 2024, many Californians are eager to spend a relaxing day fishing in the state’s abundant waterways. However, before casting a line, it’s crucial to understand the licensing requirements and fees. In California, anyone 16 years of age or older must possess a valid fishing license to legally fish in both inland and ocean waters.

Annual Fishing Licenses

For those who plan to fish regularly throughout the year, an annual sport fishing license is the most cost-effective option. In 2024, the fees for annual licenses are as follows:

Resident Sport Fishing License: $57.25
Nonresident Sport Fishing License: $154.50

To be considered a resident, an individual must have resided continuously in California for at least six months prior to purchasing the license.

Short-Term Fishing Licenses

For those who only plan to fish occasionally or are visiting California, short-term licenses are available. In 2024, the fees for short-term licenses are:

1-Day Sport Fishing License (Resident/Nonresident): $18.75
2-Day Sport Fishing License (Resident/Nonresident): $28.75

These licenses provide flexibility for anglers who don’t require a full-year license.

Reduced-Fee and Free Licenses

California offers reduced-fee and free fishing licenses for certain individuals:

Reduced-Fee Sport Fishing License for Disabled Veterans (50% or greater service-connected disability): $9.25
Reduced-Fee Sport Fishing License for Recovering Service Members: $9.25
Reduced-Fee Sport Fishing License for Low-Income Seniors (65 years of age and older): $9.25
Free Sport Fishing License for individuals meeting certain criteria

To qualify for these special licenses, anglers must meet specific requirements and may need to provide documentation.

Lifetime Fishing Licenses

For those who are avid anglers and plan to fish for many years, lifetime fishing licenses are available. In 2024, the fees for lifetime licenses range from $672.25 for individuals aged 0-9 to $994.25 for those aged 40-61. Lifetime licenses are valid for 365 days from the date of purchase and include additional validations and report cards for certain species and areas.

In addition to the fishing license, anglers may need to purchase additional validations and report cards depending on the species they are targeting and the location. These include:

Second Rod Sport Fish Validation: $18.00
Spiny Lobster Report Card: $11.25
North Coast Salmon Report Card: $8.00
Steelhead Report Card: $9.00
Ocean Enhancement Validation: $6.50

Anglers can purchase their licenses and validations online, from authorized license agents, or directly from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). It’s important to note that the CDFW no longer accepts cash at their offices, so payment must be made by check, money order, or debit/credit card.

Fishing is a popular recreational activity in California, offering anglers the opportunity to enjoy the state’s diverse waterways and catch a variety of fish species. By understanding the licensing requirements and fees, anglers can ensure they are fishing legally and contribute to the conservation efforts of the CDFW.
