Scratched CDs and DVDs can be a real nuisance, especially when they start skipping or refusing to play altogether. However, there’s a simple and inexpensive solution that can help restore your discs to their former glory – toothpaste!
Start with a basic, non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid anything with fancy gels, swirls, or strong flavors, as these can be too harsh for the delicate surface of your disc. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto the center of the CD or DVD, and then use a clean, soft cloth to gently rub the toothpaste in a sweeping motion from the center to the outer edge.
Make sure to cover the entire surface of the disc with a light, even layer of toothpaste. Once you’ve done that, let the toothpaste dry for about 5 minutes. Then, rinse the disc under lukewarm water, making sure to remove all traces of the toothpaste. Gently pat the disc dry with a clean, lint-free towel, being careful not to wipe in a circular motion, as this could cause further scratches.
If the scratches on your disc are particularly deep, the toothpaste method may not be enough to fully restore it. In these cases, you can try using a small amount of shoe polish or rubbing compound, applied and buffed in the same way as the toothpaste. You can also try gently rubbing the disc with the inside of a banana peel, which can help fill in and smooth out minor scratches.
Remember, it’s important to be gentle and patient when trying to fix scratched discs. Rushing the process or using too much pressure can actually cause more damage, so take your time and work carefully. With a little elbow grease and the right tools, you can often revive even the most heavily scratched CDs and DVDs.
