How to Easily Repair Ripped Drywall Paper Like a Pro

Dealing with ripped drywall paper can be a frustrating experience, but with the right techniques, you can fix it quickly and make it look as good as new. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to repair torn drywall paper like a pro.

Prepare the Area

Start by removing any loose edges or hanging paper using a putty knife or utility knife. Make sure the edges are smooth against the wall. It’s important to remove all loose material to ensure a proper repair.

Seal the Exposed Gypsum

The exposed gypsum in the drywall will absorb moisture from latex paints, causing blisters. To prevent this, you need to seal it. You can use a drywall primer and sealer or even an old oil-based paint.

Apply Joint Compound

Use a putty knife to spread a thin layer of joint compound (drywall mud) over the torn area. The joint compound will create a new surface, extending about an inch past the edges of the tear. Apply the mud as evenly as possible, even if it looks uneven at first.

Sand the Area

Once the joint compound has dried, sand the area using fine sandpaper (120 grit) or a random orbit sander. For a smoother finish, you can wet sand the area before it completely cures. Gently sand the area with a damp sponge to create a smooth surface that blends in with the rest of the wall.

Apply Another Layer of Joint Compound

For a professional-looking finish, apply a second layer of joint compound over the area. This will help create a wider and smoother coverage that blends in seamlessly with the surrounding wall. Repeat the sanding step after the second layer has dried.

Paint

Finally, paint the repaired area to match the rest of the wall. With the proper preparation and application of joint compound, the repaired area should be virtually invisible once painted.
