How to Mix Urethane Auto Paint: The Correct Ratio for a Flawless Finish

Mixing urethane auto paint can be a tricky process, but getting the ratio right is crucial for achieving a professional-looking, long-lasting finish. In this article, we’ll guide you through the correct ratio for mixing urethane basecoat and clear coat, as well as provide some tips for ensuring a successful paint job.

Mixing Urethane Basecoat
The correct ratio for mixing a urethane basecoat is four parts urethane basecoat to one part urethane activator. This ratio ensures that the paint has the right consistency for spraying and provides the necessary chemical reaction for proper curing.

Choosing the Right Urethane Activator

The type of urethane activator you use will depend on the size of your paint job and the ambient temperature of your work environment:
For small paint jobs or environments below 75 degrees, use a fast urethane activator.
For small paint jobs or environments between 70 and 85 degrees, use a medium urethane activator.
For larger paint jobs or environments above 80 degrees, use a slow urethane activator.
Using the wrong activator can lead to issues such as improper curing, reduced gloss, or even paint failure.
Mixing Urethane Clear Coat
The ratio for mixing urethane clear coat is similar to that of the basecoat: four parts clear coat to one part clear coat hardener. This ratio ensures that the clear coat has the right viscosity for spraying and provides the necessary chemical reaction for a durable, glossy finish.
Tips for Successful Urethane Paint Mixing
Always mix the paint and activator thoroughly to ensure a consistent blend.
Allow the mixed paint to sit for the recommended amount of time (usually 15-30 minutes) before spraying to allow the chemical reaction to occur.
Use pre-marked mixing containers or mixing cups to ensure accurate ratios
