How to Repair Dog Scratches on Painted Doors and Trim

If you have a furry friend who loves to scratch, chances are you’ve encountered unsightly claw marks on your painted doors and trim. While it may seem like a daunting task, repairing these scratches is a straightforward process that can restore your surfaces to their former glory. In this article, we’ll guide you through the steps to fix dog scratches on painted doors and trim, ensuring a smooth and seamless finish.

Assessing the Damage

The first step in repairing dog scratches is to assess the extent of the damage. Light scratches can often be treated by sanding the affected area and repainting. However, deeper scratches will require more extensive treatment.

Preparing the Surface

To fix more serious scratches, sand off the paint around the damaged area, including a small portion of the surrounding untouched wood. This will create a smooth surface for the wood filler to adhere to. Use a fine-grit sandpaper or sanding block to avoid damaging the surrounding paint.

Filling the Scratches

Once the surface is prepared, apply a wood filler to mask the deepest scratches. Use a putty knife or spatula to press the filler into the scratches, ensuring it fills them completely. Allow the filler to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Sanding and Priming

After the wood filler has dried, sand the area smooth using fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust or debris, then apply a primer to the filled area. This will help the new paint adhere to the surface and create a uniform appearance.

Painting

Finally, paint the repaired area with a color that matches your existing paint. If you can’t find an exact match, use a gel stain to blend the new paint with the old. Apply the paint in thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
