Concrete driveways are a durable and long-lasting investment for your home, but even the best-laid concrete can develop cracks over time. While small cracks can often be repaired with a simple concrete filler or caulk, larger cracks require a more comprehensive approach to ensure a lasting repair. In this article, we’ll explore how to fix those wide, unsightly cracks in your concrete driveway.
Before you can begin the repair process, it’s essential to properly prepare the crack. Start by using a wire brush or a portable drill with a wire wheel attachment to remove any loose material or debris from the crack. This will help ensure a strong bond between the patching material and the existing concrete.
Next, use a chisel or hammer to widen the crack slightly, creating a “V” shape. This will help the patching material adhere better and prevent it from popping out as the concrete expands and contracts.
For cracks wider than 1/2 inch, you’ll need to use a patching compound specifically designed for concrete. Mix the compound according to the manufacturer’s instructions, adding water until it reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.
Using a trowel, apply the patching compound to the crack, pressing it firmly into the sides and bottom. Overfill the crack slightly to compensate for any shrinkage as the compound dries.
If the crack is particularly deep, you may need to apply the compound in multiple layers, allowing each layer to dry completely before adding the next.
Once the patching compound has dried, it’s important to seal the repaired area to protect it from the elements and prevent future cracking. Use a concrete sealant or a masonry crack elastomeric filler to fill the crack and create a smooth, even surface.
Apply the sealant or filler with a caulking gun, smoothing it out with a trowel or squeegee. Be sure to feather the edges of the repair to blend it seamlessly with the surrounding concrete.
Allow the sealant or filler to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions before using the driveway.
