iPhone Home Button Not Working? 5 Quick Fixes to Try

If your iPhone’s home button has stopped working, don’t panic! There are several quick fixes you can try to get it back up and running. Here are 5 steps to troubleshoot a non-responsive home button:

Add an AssistiveTouch Home Button to the Screen

One of the easiest solutions is to enable AssistiveTouch, which adds a virtual home button to your iPhone’s screen. This allows you to bypass the physical button entirely. To set it up:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch
  2. Turn on AssistiveTouch
  3. Customize the settings to your liking

While not a permanent fix, AssistiveTouch provides a workaround until you can get your home button repaired.

“Recalibrate” the Home Button

Sometimes a simple reset can help get your home button working again. Here’s how to recalibrate it:

  1. Open an app like Notes
  2. Press and hold the Power button until the “Slide to Power Off” slider appears
  3. Press and hold the Home button until the slider disappears and the app force-closes

If this doesn’t work, repeat the process a few times. If the app never closes, this method likely won’t fix your issue.

Clean the Home Button Using Isopropyl Alcohol

Dirt and debris can sometimes get stuck under the home button, preventing it from working properly. Use a soft cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol to gently clean around the button. Be very careful not to get any liquid inside the iPhone.

Restore the Firmware on Your iPhone

If the issue is software-related, restoring your iPhone’s firmware may help. Back up your data, then:

  1. Connect your iPhone to a computer and open iTunes
  2. Press and hold the Home and Power buttons simultaneously until the recovery mode screen appears
  3. Select “Restore” to reinstall iOS

This will erase all your data, so be sure to back up first.

Use Your Charger to Press Against the Home Button

In some cases, applying gentle pressure to the home button with your charging cable can help dislodge debris. Carefully insert the end of the cable between the home button and iPhone body, then press firmly but gently. Be very careful not to damage the button.

If none of these fixes work, you likely have a hardware issue that requires professional repair. Contact Apple Support or an authorized service provider for further assistance.
