Is It Normal for Plaster Walls to Crack?

Plaster walls are a common feature in many homes, but they are not immune to cracking. In fact, it is quite normal for plaster walls to develop cracks over time. The good news is that most of these cracks are purely cosmetic and do not indicate any serious structural issues with your home.

Causes of Plaster Wall Cracks

There are several reasons why plaster walls may crack. One of the most common causes is the natural settling of the house. As a home ages, the foundation and framing can shift slightly, which can cause the plaster to crack. Temperature and humidity changes can also contribute to the formation of cracks.

If your home has walls that are plastered, then straight vertical cracks typically form when the plaster expands in humidity and shrinks as it dries. These are normal and are usually the type of cracks you’ll find in a new build property.

Repairing Plaster Wall Cracks

Fortunately, repairing plaster wall cracks is a relatively straightforward process. For smaller cracks, you can use a joint compound or spackle to fill the crack and then sand it smooth. For larger cracks, you may need to use paper tape or mesh tape to reinforce the area before applying the compound.

It’s important to note that if you have a significant number of cracks or if the cracks are particularly wide or deep, it’s best to have a professional assess the situation. They can determine if the cracks are purely cosmetic or if they indicate a more serious underlying issue.
