What Do I Need to Sell and Import Fish in Illinois in 2024?

If you’re interested in selling or importing fish in Illinois in 2024, it’s important to understand the state’s regulations and licensing requirements. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the necessary steps and permits needed to engage in the fish trade within the Prairie State.

Selling Fish in Illinois: Aquatic Life Dealer’s License

To sell aquatic life, including fish, in Illinois, you must obtain an Aquatic Life Dealer’s License from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). This license is required for both residents and non-residents who wish to conduct a retail fish market, buy or sell protected aquatic life, or ship fish to other wholesalers, retailers, or consumers within the state.

The Aquatic Life Dealer’s License comes in two forms: Resident Retail Aquatic Life Dealer License and Resident Wholesale Aquatic Life Dealer License. The Resident Retail Aquatic Life Dealer License is issued to Illinois residents who operate a retail fish market or sell aquatic life from a truck. The Resident Wholesale Aquatic Life Dealer License is issued to Illinois residents who conduct a wholesale fish market or sell protected aquatic life to other wholesalers, retailers, or commercial institutions.

These licenses are annual permits with fees expiring on March 31 of every year. To apply for an Aquatic Life Dealer’s License, contact the IDNR at 217-785-3423 or 217-782-2965.

Importing Fish into Illinois: Permits and Regulations

If you plan to import fish into Illinois, you’ll need to comply with the state’s regulations and obtain the necessary permits. The Illinois Administrative Code Part 870 covers the requirements for aquaculture activities, including the importation and possession of aquatic life.

Depending on the species of fish you intend to import, you may need one of the following permits:

1. VHSv Susceptible Species Importation Permit: This permit is required for importing fish species that are susceptible to Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia (VHS), a serious fish disease.

2. Salmonid Importation Permit: If you plan to import salmonid fish, such as trout and salmon, you’ll need this permit.

To obtain these permits, contact the IDNR Division of Fisheries at One Natural Resources Way, Springfield, IL 62702-1271 or by emailing dnr.aquaculture@illinois.gov.

It’s important to note that Illinois also has regulations regarding injurious species. Certain species are prohibited from being possessed, propagated, bought, sold, or transported within the state without a permit from the IDNR.

Additional Considerations

When selling or importing fish in Illinois, keep the following points in mind:

– Ensure that the fish you sell or import are from approved species listed by the IDNR.

– Maintain proper records of your fish transactions, including the source, quantity, and destination of the fish.

– Be aware of any local ordinances or zoning regulations that may apply to your fish-related business.

– Stay informed about any changes in Illinois’ fish-related laws and regulations to ensure compliance.

By understanding and adhering to Illinois’ requirements for selling and importing fish, you can engage in these activities legally and responsibly in 2024 and beyond.
