McCulloch, once a renowned name in the chainsaw industry, has undergone a significant transformation over the years. The company, founded in 1943 by Robert McCulloch, was a pioneer in the development of lightweight and powerful chainsaws that revolutionized the woodworking industry.
The Rise and Fall of McCulloch
In the 1950s and 1960s, McCulloch continued to grow and expand, diversifying into airplane engines and kart engines. However, the company’s fortunes took a turn in the 1970s when it was acquired by Black & Decker. This acquisition marked the beginning of a decline in the quality and reputation of McCulloch chainsaws, as the brand became associated with mass-produced, lower-quality products.
In 1999, McCulloch sold its European division to the Swedish company Husqvarna AB. Nine years later, in 2008, Husqvarna also acquired the rights to the McCulloch brand on the North American market. Since then, McCulloch has become a brand within the Husqvarna Group, known for its line of garden products, including powerful chainsaws, trimmers, lawnmowers, and hedge trimmers.
Today, McCulloch continues to offer a range of garden equipment, leveraging the brand’s heritage and reputation for reliability and power. While the brand may not hold the same iconic status it once did, it remains a part of the Husqvarna Group, providing consumers with a familiar and trusted name in the world of outdoor power tools.
