What is the Daily Bag and Possession Limit for Fishing in California in 2024?

As the 2024 fishing season approaches, anglers in California are eager to know the latest regulations and limits for their favorite pastime. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has recently released the updated 2024 Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations, which include important information on daily bag and possession limits for various species of fish.

Daily Bag and Possession Limit

According to the 2024 Freshwater Sport Fishing Regulations, the daily bag and possession limit is 20 fish in combination of all species (except shiner perch), with not more than 10 fish of any one species. This means that anglers can keep a total of 20 fish per day, but no more than 10 of any single species.

It’s important to note that this limit applies to both the number of fish caught and the number of fish in possession at any given time. For example, if an angler catches their limit of 20 fish and decides to keep fishing, they must release any additional fish caught, as they have already reached their daily limit.

Exceptions and Variations

While the general daily bag and possession limit is 20 fish, there are some exceptions and variations depending on the specific species and location. For instance, the limit for striped bass is two fish per day, and the limit for white sturgeon is one fish per day.

Additionally, certain bodies of water may have different limits or special regulations. Anglers should always check the regulations for the specific water they plan to fish before heading out.

Enforcement and Penalties

The CDFW takes the enforcement of fishing regulations very seriously. Anglers caught exceeding the daily bag and possession limit or violating other regulations may face fines and other penalties.

In addition to fines, anglers may also face the possibility of having their fishing license revoked or suspended, depending on the severity of the violation.

Responsible Fishing Practices

While the daily bag and possession limit is an important regulation, anglers should also practice responsible fishing habits to ensure the sustainability of fish populations. This includes practicing catch-and-release when appropriate, using proper handling techniques, and avoiding overfishing of sensitive species.

By following the regulations and practicing responsible fishing, anglers can enjoy a successful and sustainable fishing experience in California in 2024 and beyond.
