Does spot putty need hardener?

Spot putty is another type of filler that is used to fill tiny pinholes in the body filler. If you don’t fill those pinholes, the filler might crack when there is any movement of the underlying metal. It is very easy to sand, dries fast and doesn’t need a hardener to cure. You can just apply it from the tube.

What is the difference between body filler and spot putty?

Putty is essentially a thick paint with a filler material – it’s generally used for very small scratches where the metal is not exposed. Air hardening. Body filler is a polyester resin suitable for small dents.

How do you mix Bondo spot putty?

MIXING: Squeeze out a 1 inch diameter circle of the putty filler. Then squeeze out a 1 inch strip/bead of the red cream hardener. Mix thoroughly and quickly; working time is only 5 minutes.

How long before you can sand spot putty?

Allow the putty to cure for 30 minutes or until hard to the touch.

Can Spot Putty be applied over primer?

Putty, like paint, adheres better and stays intact when applied to bare metal. So make sure you completely remove all oil, grime, solvent, rust, and paint from the surface. Before using auto putty be sure to use a Scotch-Brite pad to scuff the surface of primed metal to give the putty something to adhere to.

Believe it or not it actually takes between 8-12 weeks before its dry enough to be decorated. Some people don’t leave it this long but we recommend you do. One of the reasons putty has been used by glaziers for so long is that if painted it never really goes hard and dries out completely.

How long does Bondo putty take to dry?

Allow the putty to dry 15 minutes at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). In cooler climates, putty may take 20-30 minutes to dry.

Can I put filler over paint?

It is normal for filler and puttie to work OK over OEM paint that has been properly sanded (80-180 grit). The aftermarket paint market is filled with a variety of different types (lacquer, enamel, urethane, water-based). Paint should be removed from the area where filler will be applied before it is applied.

Can you wet sand spot putty?

Filler is primarily for bare metal. So yeah, the talc in the filler will absorb a little water. Don’t wet sand filler. Filler is too absorbant and you can have problems getting it dry plus you could cause moisture to wick through to the metal or weaken the bond between the filler and the substrate.

How do you spot Bondo?

Easy way to tell is to place a magnet on various body panels. Place it especially on the quarter panels, rocker panels, any area where rust can develop. If it won’t stick, that’s where the Bondo or filler has been used.

Is Bondo better than wood filler?

The biggest advantage of using Bondo over a regular wood filler is the short dry time. Wood filler can take hours to dry and require more than one coat. Bondo dries in less than 30 minutes and only requires one coat! This means more projects in less time.

Is Bondo putty waterproof?

Bondo Fiberglass Resins and Repair Kits are 100 percent waterproof. Bondo Ultimate can be applied directly over sanded and cured primer and paint. This filler remains easy to sand for days after the application.

Is Bondo toxic to breathe?

Bondo is very toxic, especially the dust fibers. Don’t get it on your skin or breathe it directly without a mask. Fumes are very flammable too; not something you want to use around a home heater. fire may build pressure and explode.

Do you prime before body filler?

Do not proceed to Primer Filler stage until filled area is even. Adding body filler AFTER primer filler should be avoided to prevent possible adhesion, staining and shrinkage concerns.

Does putty need primer?

Priming will help the new putty adhere and add another layer of protection. Be sure to prime all of the bare wood, brushing it into all the corners and hard to reach spots. Any primer you get on the glass can easily be scraped away when dry. When the primer is dry you can begin to putty the window.

Can you paint over putty straight away?

I leave to skin over for around 5-6 days then u/coat with an oil based paint. Over the summer I had success with Repair Care acrylic putty system, good but expensive at around £10 per tube although goes a long way and a great time saver as can be painted after a couple of hours.

Does paint putty harden?

When used as a filler, Painter’s Putty ’53’ requires 24 to 48 hours to “skin” (surface dry) for paint application. The product can take several more days to dry firm (not hard).
