Where Can I Buy a Washington State Fishing License in 2024?

Fishing is a popular pastime in Washington state, with diverse opportunities for anglers across freshwater lakes, rivers, and the Pacific coast. However, before you can cast your line, it’s essential to ensure you have a valid fishing license. In Washington, everyone aged 15 and older needs a recreational fishing license, with a few exceptions.

Purchasing a Washington State Fishing License

There are several convenient ways to purchase your Washington state fishing license in 2024:

Online: Visit the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) website to buy your license online 24/7.
By Phone: Call the WDFW at 360-902-2464 to purchase your license over the phone.
In Person: Visit one of the hundreds of license dealers around the state, including Walmart, Fred Meyer, Ace Hardware, local tackle shops, and marine stores. Some popular options include Echoes Motel in Copalis Beach, Outdoor Emporium in Seattle, and Sportco in Fife.

When buying online or by phone, it may take up to 10 days to receive your license in the mail. If your WILD ID has an email address associated with it, you will be emailed a temporary license to use during this period.

Types of Washington State Fishing Licenses

Washington offers several types of annual fishing licenses depending on your residency status and the type of fishing you plan to do:

Resident Annual Freshwater, Saltwater, and Shellfish/Seaweed Licenses: Available for Washington state residents.
Non-Resident Annual Freshwater, Saltwater, and Shellfish/Seaweed Licenses: For individuals who are not Washington state residents.
Combination Licenses: Packages that combine multiple licenses, such as the Fish Washington package (annual freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing, shellfish/seaweed, Puget Sound Dungeness crab, and two-pole endorsements) and the Get Outdoors package (Fish Washington package plus deer, elk, bear, cougar, small game licenses, migratory bird permit and hunt authorization, two turkey tags, and bear and cougar tags).

Discounted fees may be available for certain individuals, such as youth, seniors, disabled persons, and members of the military.

Additional Requirements and Endorsements

Depending on the species you plan to target and the location, you may need additional endorsements or catch record cards:

Catch Record Cards: Required when fishing for salmon, steelhead, sturgeon, halibut, and Puget Sound Dungeness crab. Everyone, including those younger than 15, must carry a catch record card when fishing.
Endorsements: Purchased along with your fishing license to enhance your fishing opportunities, such as the Columbia River Salmon/Steelhead Endorsement.

It’s important to note that even if you are not required to have a license, such as those fishing for common carp, crawfish, bullfrogs, or collecting relic shells, you must still follow all other fishing regulations and requirements.

Fishing License Fees and Pricing

The cost of your Washington state fishing license will depend on your residency status, age, and the type of license you purchase:

Resident Annual Freshwater, Saltwater, and Shellfish/Seaweed Licenses: Prices vary based on age and license type.
Non-Resident Annual Freshwater, Saltwater, and Shellfish/Seaweed Licenses: Generally more expensive than resident licenses.
Combination Licenses: Offer a discounted price compared to purchasing individual licenses separately.

You can find detailed pricing information for fishing licenses on the WDFW website.

Fishing Regulations and Conservation

Washington has its own set of fishing laws and regulations that must be followed to protect fish populations. These regulations cover aspects such as size limits, bag limits, seasons, and gear restrictions. It’s essential to familiarize yourself with the regulations for the specific area you plan to fish and the species you intend to target.

By purchasing a fishing license and following regulations, you contribute to the conservation efforts that help maintain healthy fish populations and ensure the sustainability of Washington’s fisheries for generations to come.

In conclusion, obtaining a valid fishing license is a crucial step in enjoying the abundant fishing opportunities that Washington state has to offer. With multiple convenient purchasing options, a variety of license types, and reasonable fees, there’s no excuse not to get out on the water and experience the thrill of fishing in the Evergreen State.
