Where Can You Fish in Florida Without a License in 2024?

Fishing is a popular pastime in Florida, attracting both residents and visitors alike. However, before you cast your line, it’s important to understand the state’s fishing license requirements. In 2024, there are several places and situations where you can fish without a license in Florida.

Fishing Charters and Licensed Piers

One of the most convenient ways to fish in Florida without a license is by booking a saltwater fishing charter. These charters have commercial licenses that cover all anglers on board, whether they are residents or non-residents. Many public fishing piers also have commercial licenses that allow fishing without a personal license. However, it’s always a good idea to call ahead and ask about the pier’s specific licensing requirements.

Florida Residents with Disabilities

Florida residents with severe disabilities can fish for free with a Florida Resident Disabled Person Hunting and Fishing License. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) issues these licenses to eligible individuals, providing them with the opportunity to enjoy fishing without the added expense.

Florida Residents Receiving Benefits

Certain Florida residents who receive government assistance can also fish without a license. Those receiving benefits or food stamps from the Department of Children and Families (DCF) are exempt from needing a saltwater fishing license when fishing from land or a structure fixed to land.

Florida Residents Fishing from Shore

Surf fishing from shore is free year-round for Florida residents of all ages, but you must obtain a free license and have it in your possession while fishing. This exemption applies to both saltwater and freshwater fishing from shore within your county of residence.

Florida Residents Fishing on Their Homestead

Florida residents who are freshwater fishing or hunting on their homestead (or the homestead of their spouse or minor child) within their county of residence are exempt from needing a license. This exemption also applies to minors fishing or hunting on their parent’s homestead.

License-Free Fishing Days

The FWC sets aside several days throughout the year when fishing licenses are not required for both residents and non-residents. In 2024, the license-free saltwater fishing days are:

  • June 1 & 2 (First consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June)
  • September 7, 2024 (First Saturday in September)
  • November 30, 2024 (Saturday following Thanksgiving)

The license-free freshwater fishing days are:

  • April 6 & 7, 2024 (First consecutive Saturday and Sunday in April)
  • June 8 & 9, 2024 (Second consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June)

On these days, the fishing license requirement is waived for all recreational anglers, allowing them to experience fishing without the need to purchase a license.

While there are several places and situations where you can fish without a license in Florida in 2024, it’s important to remember that all other fishing rules and regulations still apply. This includes size and bag limits, as well as any special permits required for certain species like spiny lobster, snook, and tarpon.

If you plan to fish regularly in Florida, it may be worth considering purchasing an annual fishing license. These licenses are relatively inexpensive, with annual freshwater and saltwater licenses costing only $17 for Florida residents. By purchasing a license, you are contributing to the state’s conservation efforts and helping to ensure that Florida’s waterways remain healthy and well-stocked for years to come.
