Who Can Fish for Free in Ohio in 2024? A Comprehensive Guide

Fishing is a popular pastime in Ohio, offering a chance to enjoy the great outdoors and connect with nature. While most anglers need to purchase a fishing license, there are certain groups that can fish for free in the Buckeye State. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore who can fish without a license in Ohio in 2024.

Children Under 16

One of the most notable groups that can fish for free in Ohio are children under the age of 16, regardless of their residency status. This means that both Ohio residents and non-residents who are under 16 can enjoy fishing in Ohio’s public waterways without the need for a license.

Ohio Residents Born Before December 31, 1937

Ohio residents born on or before December 31, 1937, can obtain a free fishing license at any license outlet or online. This exemption recognizes the contributions of Ohio’s senior citizens and provides them with the opportunity to continue enjoying their favorite pastime without additional costs.

Mobility-Impaired and Blind Anglers

Ohio residents who are mobility-impaired or blind and require assistance to fish are also eligible for a free fishing license. To qualify, applicants must meet certain criteria, such as residing in Ohio for at least six consecutive months and being unable to engage in fishing without the assistance of another person.

The application process involves submitting a formal application (Form DNR 9032) and providing a physician’s or optometrist’s certification of the applicant’s condition. Once approved, the individual will receive detailed instructions on how to obtain their free license.

Residents of State and County Institutions

Ohio residents who are currently residing in state or county institutions, charitable institutions, or military homes in Ohio may also be eligible for a free fishing license. To qualify, the applicant must have resided in Ohio for at least six consecutive months and be a resident of an eligible institution.

The application process is similar to that of mobility-impaired and blind anglers, requiring the completion of a formal application (Form DNR 9032) and meeting the residency and institutional requirements.

Disabled Veterans and Former Prisoners of War

Ohio residents who are disabled veterans or former prisoners of war (POWs) may be eligible for a free 5-year fishing license. To qualify, the applicant must be an Ohio resident, have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces, and meet specific criteria related to their disability or POW status.

The application process involves completing the Disabled Veterans & Former POW 5-Year Free License Application (Form DNR 9032-B) and submitting it to the Ohio Department of Veterans Services for eligibility verification.

Free Fishing Days

In addition to the groups mentioned above, Ohio offers free fishing days throughout the year, allowing all Ohio residents to fish without a license for a limited time. In 2024, Ohio’s free fishing days are scheduled for June 15-16.

During these free fishing days, Ohio residents 16 years old and older can fish in any public lake, reservoir, stream, or river without purchasing a fishing license. All other fishing regulations, size requirements, and bag limits still apply.

Ohio’s free fishing days provide a unique opportunity for families and friends to enjoy fishing together, creating special moments outdoors. It’s a great way to introduce newcomers to the sport and encourage more people to explore Ohio’s abundant fishing resources.
