Who is Exempt from Buying an Alabama Fishing License in 2024?

Fishing is a popular pastime in Alabama, with the state offering a diverse array of freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities. However, before casting your line, it’s important to understand the state’s fishing license requirements. In 2024, certain individuals are exempt from needing a fishing license in Alabama.

Residents Under 16 and Over 65

One of the most notable exemptions is for Alabama residents under the age of 16 and over the age of 65. These individuals do not need to purchase a fishing license to enjoy the state’s waterways.

Residents Fishing on Public Banks

Another exemption applies to Alabama residents who are fishing from a local bank in their county of residence. As long as they have proof of residency, they can fish without a license.

Alabama Residents on Military Leave

Alabama residents who are home on military leave are also exempt from needing a fishing license. However, they must have their military ID and paperwork in their possession while fishing.

Fishing with an Alabama Saltwater Guide or Charter

If you’re planning to fish in Alabama’s saltwater areas with a licensed guide or charter service, you won’t need to purchase a separate fishing license. The boat’s license covers everyone on board.

Non-Resident College Students

Non-resident college students between the ages of 17 and 23 can obtain a residency exception from their local probate office, license commissioner, marine resource office, or any authorized outdoor recreation office. This allows them to purchase a special license at the same price as an Alabama resident.

Disabled Individuals and Veterans

Alabama offers discounted fishing licenses for disabled individuals and disabled military veterans. Totally disabled residents can purchase an annual freshwater or saltwater fishing license for just $3.40. Veterans who are at least 20% disabled can get an annual freshwater license for $3.50.

Purchasing an Alabama Fishing License

For those who don’t fall into one of the exempt categories, purchasing an Alabama fishing license is easy. Licenses can be obtained online, through the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources website, or in person at various locations throughout the state.

The cost of an Alabama fishing license varies depending on the type of license and whether the angler is a resident or non-resident. In 2024, resident annual licenses start at $16.15 for freshwater fishing and $28.50 for saltwater fishing. Non-resident annual licenses are $62.60 for freshwater fishing and $61.35 for saltwater fishing.

Alabama also offers daily and trip licenses for both residents and non-residents. These are ideal for those who only plan to fish for a short period of time.

It’s important to note that even if you are exempt from purchasing an annual saltwater fishing license, such as those who are 65 or older or only fish from a pier, you still need to complete the saltwater angler registry. This is a free registration that can be done online.

In conclusion, while most anglers in Alabama are required to purchase a fishing license, there are several exemptions and discounts available. By understanding the state’s fishing license requirements, anglers can enjoy the sport while staying compliant with the law.
