Repairing Small Cracks and Scratches
For minor cracks or scratches in the mirror backing, a glass repair kit can be an effective solution. These kits typically contain a clear, resin-based adhesive that can be applied directly to the damaged area. Once the adhesive dries, it helps to fill in the crack or scratch, restoring the mirror’s reflective surface.
Resilvering the Mirror Backing
If the mirror backing has experienced more significant damage, such as black spots or peeling, a resilvering spray may be the best option. These specialized sprays contain a thin layer of aluminum or silver that can be applied to the back of the mirror, effectively re-coating the surface and renewing the reflectivity.
It’s important to note that resilvering a mirror does not fix any underlying issues with the glass itself, such as chips or deep scratches. If the glass is damaged, the mirror may need to be replaced entirely.
