Proper maintenance of x-ray equipment is crucial for ensuring accurate and high-quality imaging. One important aspect of this maintenance is regularly cleaning x-ray cassettes. But how often should this be done?
Cleaning Frequency
According to the WHO manual on darkroom technique, x-ray cassettes should be cleaned at least once every 6 months. However, this interval may need to be shortened depending on usage. If many x-ray films are processed, your instructor-radiographer may advise cleaning the cassettes more frequently.
In general, it’s recommended to clean x-ray grids after each patient or imaging session. This helps remove any dirt, debris, or oil that may have accumulated, preventing image artifacts and maintaining image quality.
Cleaning Process
When cleaning x-ray cassettes, it’s important to use only approved disinfectants and cleaners on the exterior. Never pour liquids directly on the surface of the cassette. Instead, use a clean, low-linting cloth dampened (not dripping) with the solution.
Focus the cleaning on the exterior of the equipment, including the covers and command and display controls. Consult your operation manual for specific cleaning procedures and chemical solutions authorized by the manufacturer.
