How to Restore Scratched and Warped Vinyl Records

Vinyl records are a beloved format for music enthusiasts, but they can suffer from various types of damage over time. Whether your records are warped from improper storage or scratched from wear and tear, there are ways to restore them and improve your listening experience. In this article, we’ll guide you through the process of repairing both warped and scratched vinyl records.

Repairing a Warped Record

Warping can occur due to excessive heat or improper storage. To repair a warped record, you’ll need two sheets of flat overproof glass that are large enough to cover a 12″ record but small enough to fit into your oven. Follow these steps:

Turn your oven to the lowest heat possible (no above 120 degrees Fahrenheit).
Carefully sandwich your vinyl in between the two sheets of glass.
Place your creation into the oven for no more than ten minutes.
Take it out and remove your vinyl from between the pieces of glass.
Place the record on a flat surface and set a book or another heavy object on top of it.
Leave it to cool in this position for at least an hour. Then, remove the object and inspect it.

Be cautious when using this method, as improper execution can lead to further damage.

Repairing a Scratched Record

If your vinyl has scratches, you can try sanding them out using a gentle approach. Here’s how:

Gently wash your vinyl with water to remove any obvious debris.
Grab a piece of 1500-grit sandpaper and wet it. You can also use a small amount of liquid soap as a lubricant.
Wet your vinyl and place it on a hard, flat surface.
Lightly sand each side of the vinyl where there are scratches. Some people prefer to sand the entire record for a uniform look. Use curving strokes that run parallel with your vinyl’s grooves as you sand.
