How to Stop Windows from Scanning and Repairing Your Drive

If your Windows computer is stuck in the “Scanning and Repairing Drive” process, you may be wondering if there’s a way to interrupt or stop it. The good news is that you can indeed bypass this automatic disk checking process and take control of the situation.

Disable Automatic Disk Checking

As you may know, you can disable the automatic disk checking process in the Automatic Repair feature of Windows. During the startup process, you’ll have the chance to bypass the “Scanning and Repairing Drive” step by pressing any key on your keyboard.

How to Stop Windows from Scanning and Repairing the Drive

Here’s how you can stop Windows from automatically scanning and repairing your drive:

When you see the “Preparing Automatic Repair” screen, press any key, such as the spacebar, continuously.
This will give you the option to disable the disk checking process.
You can also try pressing “Ctrl C” to interrupt the “Diagnosing Your PC” step.

Run CHKDSK in Safe Mode

If the above method doesn’t work or you’re unable to boot into Windows, you can try running CHKDSK (Check Disk) in Safe Mode:

Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to shut down your computer.
Press the power button to start the computer, and as soon as you see the first sign of Windows starting, hold down the power button for 10 seconds again to turn off the device.
Repeat step 2 until you see the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) screen.
Select “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced options” > “Startup Settings” > “Restart”.
In the Startup Settings menu, choose option 5 or press “F5” to enable Safe Mode with Networking.
Once in Safe Mode, open “This PC”, right-click the drive that’s being scanned and repaired, and select “Properties”.
Go to the “Tools” tab and choose “Check” to run CHKDSK on the drive.
