Steel braided hoses, commonly used in applications requiring additional strength and pressure resistance, can be repaired using the same principles as regular garden hoses. While they may be more challenging to cut, the repair process involves utilizing couplers from a repair kit to join undamaged sections together.
Preparing the Hose for Repair
Begin by locating the damaged section of the hose. If necessary, remove it from any attached devices. Allow the hose to warm up in the sun for a few hours to increase the flexibility of the rubber portions. For additional flexibility, soak the damaged area in hot water.
Put on work gloves and firmly grasp the hose with pliers. Using a hacksaw, cut through the hose on either side of the damaged section, removing it completely. Clean the edges with a utility knife.
Using a Repair Kit
Purchase a steel braided hose repair kit that corresponds to your hose type. Take the damaged section to the store to help determine the size and type needed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to loosen the clamped sections of the coupler, generally with a screwdriver.
Rub dish soap over the ends of the two hose pieces that will slide into the coupler. This will lubricate them for easier insertion. Slide both ends into the coupler device, ensuring they are pushed in as far as possible. Hold them in place while tightening the screws on the coupler, locking the two ends in place.
