Lamps are a common household item that can add style and ambiance to any room. However, when the switch on your lamp stops working, it can be frustrating. Instead of throwing the lamp away or paying for professional repairs, you can replace the switch yourself. Preparing to Replace the Lamp Switch
Before you begin, make sure you have the necessary tools and materials. You’ll need a new switch that fits your lamp, wire strippers, and a screwdriver. It’s also important to unplug the lamp and remove the light bulb and lamp shade.
Removing the Old Switch
The first step is to remove the old switch. Depending on your lamp, this may involve squeezing the socket shell to remove it from the lamp base or unscrewing a nut at the bottom of the lamp. Once the socket shell is removed, you’ll see the wires attached to the old switch. Use wire strippers to carefully remove about 1/2 an inch of insulation from the wires.
Installing the New Switch
With the wires exposed, you can now connect them to the new switch. Make sure to match the wires correctly: the neutral wire (usually marked with a different color or ribbed insulation) goes to the silver screw terminal, while the hot wire goes to the brass screw terminal. Tighten the screws securely and make sure the connections are tight.
If your lamp has a cord switch, you’ll need to remove the old switch and connect the wires to the new switch in the same way. Make sure to note which wire goes where before disconnecting the old switch.
