Is Vaping Marijuana More Harmful Than Other Forms of Smoking?

The recent surge in vaping marijuana has raised significant concerns about its impact on lung health, especially when compared to other forms of smoking. While vaping in general is perceived as a less harmful alternative to traditional smoking, recent studies suggest that vaping marijuana might be more damaging than other forms of smoking, including cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

According to University of Michigan research, vaping marijuana is associated with a higher number of respiratory symptoms indicative of lung damage than using e-cigarettes or smoking cigarettes. “In short, it is all bad but if you also vape cannabis you have a greater number of unhealthy respiratory symptoms than if you just smoke cigarettes or marijuana or vape e-cigarettes,” explained researcher Boyd.

Despite the growing legality of marijuana use in various states, it’s important to note that marijuana smoke contains many of the same harmful substances as cigarette smoke. Both have been linked to heart disease and cancer. Marijuana, specifically, may pose heart-related risks. It can cause an accelerated heart rate and increased blood pressure, which might be perilous for individuals with heart conditions. Research also suggests a heightened risk of heart attack shortly after smoking marijuana.

On the other hand, the process of vaping involves heating a liquid to create an aerosol that is inhaled into the lungs. This method, though perceived as safer, has its own set of risks. It’s important to acknowledge the uncertainty surrounding the long-term effects of vaping, as much remains unknown. Harvard Health emphasizes the gaps in our understanding of vaping’s impact on lung health.

Considering these factors, it’s clear that both vaping and smoking marijuana carry significant health risks. Whether one is more harmful than the other remains a subject of ongoing research and debate. As the medical community continues to study the effects of marijuana and vaping, it’s crucial for individuals, especially those with existing health conditions, to approach these habits with caution.
