Why is My Wallpaper Coming Off Walls?

Wallpaper is glued to your wall with an adhesive that over time and in especially humid and dry conditions this can weaken and cause the wallpaper to peel away from the wall.

Understanding the Causes of Peeling Wallpaper

Wallpaper peeling can be attributed to various factors, including environmental conditions, quality of materials, installation errors, and poor surface preparation. High humidity, extreme temperature fluctuations, and wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens are particularly susceptible to wallpaper peeling. Using high-quality adhesives and primers, such as those from ROMAN Products, is vital for long-lasting wallpaper adhesion. Incorrect wallpaper installation techniques, uneven or insufficient adhesive application, and air bubbles trapped under the wallpaper can also lead to peeling.

Environmental Factors and Material Quality

Humidity issues are a common cause of wallpaper peeling. When exposed to humidity, wallpaper can start peeling at corners and seams. Not only is this unattractive, but the possible creation of mold behind the wallpaper can create various health implications. Fabric-backed vinyl wallcovering and micro-vented vinyl are both highly resistant to moisture. The quality of materials used, including the type of adhesive and primer, significantly impacts the durability of wallpaper. Vinyl wallpaper is generally more durable and less prone to peeling, while paper-based wallpaper may be more susceptible to moisture and peeling in humid conditions.

Installation Errors and Surface Preparation

Incorrect wallpaper installation techniques can lead to peeling. It’s essential to follow manufacturer guidelines for installation, including using the recommended tools and procedures. Walls must be clean, dry, and smooth before applying wallpaper. Applying a primer, such as those from ROMAN Products, can further enhance adhesion, creating a suitable surface for wallpaper installation. Air bubbles trapped under the wallpaper can lead to peeling, and it’s essential to use the right tools like smoothers and rollers during installation to eliminate air bubbles and ensure a smooth, adhesive bond.
