If you’ve accidentally pushed in the dome of your speaker’s tweeter, you may be wondering if it can be fixed. The short answer is that while the structural damage cannot be repaired, there are some steps you can take to improve the appearance and potentially restore some of the original performance.
Assessing the Damage
When a soft-dome tweeter is pushed in, it can become creased, leading to increased distortion compared to an undamaged unit. This structural damage is permanent and cannot be fully repaired. However, the extent of the performance impact depends on factors such as the quality of the original tweeter and the severity of the damage.
Restoring the Shape
While you can’t undo the structural damage, you may be able to restore the shape of the tweeter dome to some degree. Avoid using sticky tape or adhesives, as these can pull off the delicate coating or leave residues behind. A better approach is to use a vacuum cleaner hose to gently pull the dome back out. Be extremely careful not to let the nozzle touch the tweeter, as this could cause further damage.
