In Maine, the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) has implemented several changes to fishing license requirements and regulations in response to the ongoing situation.
Fishing License Requirement Waived for Inland Waters
One of the most significant changes is the temporary waiver of the fishing license requirement for inland waters in Maine. On March 27, 2020, Governor Janet Mills announced that the inland waters fishing license requirement would be suspended until April 30, 2024, to encourage Maine residents to enjoy the outdoors while practicing social distancing.
This change allows individuals who may be unable to or feel uncomfortable visiting a store to purchase a fishing license to still enjoy fishing in Maine’s inland waters during this challenging time.
Online Fishing License Purchases
Despite the temporary waiver for inland waters, fishing licenses are still required for saltwater fishing and certain other areas in Maine. Fortunately, the MDIFW offers an online licensing system called MOSES (Maine Online Sportsman’s Electronic System) for purchasing hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses.
Through MOSES, residents and non-residents can easily obtain their fishing licenses from the comfort of their own homes. This online system is available to any sportsperson looking to fish in the State of Maine, with the exception of individuals needing to obtain a complimentary, lifetime, or military license, or those from countries other than the USA or Canada.
Boating Regulations and Registrations
In addition to fishing license changes, Maine has also made adjustments to boating regulations and registrations. On March 27, 2020, Governor Mills directed MDIFW Commissioner Judy Camuso to allow boaters to operate without a current 2024 registration and milfoil sticker until April 30, 2024.
This temporary change provides relief to boaters who may have been unable to renew their registrations due to the ongoing situation.
