Catapults: Tension and Torsion

The catapult, a weapon dating back to ancient times, utilizes tension within a series of ropes and arms to launch its payload. The arms of the catapult are bent back and held in place by ropes or springs, creating a significant amount of tension. When the ropes are released or the springs are triggered, the arms snap forward, propelling the projectile towards the target.

Trebuchets: Gravity and Leverage

In contrast, the trebuchet, a more advanced siege engine that emerged in the Middle Ages, relies on the force of gravity and the principle of leverage. A trebuchet consists of a long arm mounted on a pivoting base. At one end of the arm, a sling or pouch is attached to hold the projectile.
