The United States Congress is composed of two chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives. While the number of terms a Senator can serve is not constitutionally limited, a proposed amendment known as Senate Joint Resolution 21 (S.J.Res.21) aims to change that.
Proposed Term Limits for Congress
If S.J.Res.21 were to be approved by two-thirds of the members in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, and subsequently ratified by three-fourths of the states, it would establish the following term limits:
Senators
Senators would be limited to serving a maximum of two six-year terms.
Representatives
Members of the House of Representatives would be limited to serving a maximum of six two-year terms.
The resolution also proposes that any service in Congress prior to the ratification of the amendment would not count towards the term limits.
