Entering Safe Mode in Windows 10 and 8
Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode in Windows that loads the operating system with only essential files and drivers. It can be useful for troubleshooting problems and removing malware. Here’s how to enter Safe Mode in Windows 10 and 8:
Hold the Shift key while clicking Restart on the Power menu on the login screen or through the Charms bar menu
You will be taken to the “Startup Settings” screen
Choose whether you want to run your computer in regular Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Safe Mode with Networking allows for additional support and the ability to download new drivers or antivirus software if needed
You can also enter Safe Mode through the Advanced Troubleshooting options:
Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery
Under “Advanced startup” click “Restart now”
Click “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced options” > “Startup Settings” > “Restart”

Entering Safe Mode in Windows 7, Vista, and XP
On older versions of Windows, you can enter Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing the F8 key in one-second intervals before the Windows logo appears:

Press Enter to boot into Safe Mode
Running Startup Repair
If your HP computer won’t boot into Windows, you can try running a Startup Repair:
Turn off your computer and turn it back on
On your keyboard, press Escape repeatedly until the Startup menu displays
Press F11 to select System Recovery
On the “Choose an option” screen, select “Troubleshoot” > “Advanced options” > “Startup Settings” > “Restart”
Select “Startup Repair” and let it finish

When in Windows, click Start and type “Restore” in the search field
Select “System Restore”
Select a restore point when the computer was operating properly
