If your car’s power window has stopped working, it could be due to a faulty window regulator. The window regulator is the mechanism that raises and lowers the window glass. When it fails, the window may get stuck, move erratically, or not move at all. Fortunately, there are two easy methods to temporarily fix a power window with a bad regulator until you can replace it.
Method 1: Manually Roll Up the Window
If your power window is stuck in the down position, you can manually roll it up using the following steps:
Turn the ignition key to the on or accessory position.
Press and hold the window switch in the closed or up position. With the window button depressed, open and then slam the car door. This sudden movement may provide enough momentum to roll the window up.
If that doesn’t work, try gently tapping the window switch while slamming the door. The combination of the switch and the door slam may get the window moving.
As a last resort, use a tool to press the window switch while slamming the door. Be careful not to damage the switch or the door panel.
Keep in mind that this method is only a temporary fix and should not be used for an extended period. Forcing the window up can cause further damage to the regulator or other components.
Method 2: Secure the Window with a Bungee Cord
If your power window is stuck in the up position, you can secure it with a bungee cord to prevent it from falling down. Here’s how:
Open the door panel to access the window regulator.
Locate the cable or arm that connects the regulator to the window glass.
Attach one end of the bungee cord to the cable or arm using a clamp or tape.
Run the bungee cord through the door frame and attach the other end to a sturdy point, such as the door hinge or a bolt.
Make sure the bungee cord is tight enough to hold the window in place but not so tight that it puts excessive strain on the regulator.
This method allows you to safely drive with the window secured until you can replace the regulator. However, it’s important to note that the window will not be able to be rolled down, and you should avoid opening the door too much to prevent the window from falling out.
In both cases, it’s crucial to disconnect the window motor’s electrical connector to prevent accidental activation and further damage to the regulator.
While these methods can temporarily fix a power window with a bad regulator, the best long-term solution is to replace the regulator as soon as possible. A faulty regulator can cause further damage to the window mechanism and may lead to more expensive repairs if left unattended.
