Scratched game discs can be a frustrating problem for Xbox 360 owners, but there are a few household remedies that may help temporarily restore a damaged disc. While these methods won’t permanently fix deep scratches, they can sometimes get a scratched disc working again – at least for a little while.
Fixing Surface-Level Scratches
Using Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline)
One of the most commonly recommended solutions for lightly scratched Xbox 360 discs is to apply a small amount of petroleum jelly (also known as Vaseline) to the surface of the disc. The jelly can help fill in and smooth over surface-level scratches, allowing the disc to be read by the console. Simply apply a thin layer of Vaseline to the disc, let it sit for a few minutes, then wipe it clean with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Toothpaste to the Rescue
Another household item that may help with minor disc scratches is plain, white toothpaste. The abrasives in toothpaste can help buff out light surface scratches, similar to how the petroleum jelly works. Apply a small dab of toothpaste to the disc, rub it in gently with a clean cloth, then rinse and dry the disc thoroughly.
