Assessing Your Diving Board
Before beginning the refurbishment process, carefully inspect your diving board for any structural damage or safety concerns. Look for cracks, warping, or excessive wear that may compromise the board’s integrity. If you notice any major issues, it’s best to replace the board entirely rather than attempting to refurbish it.
Gathering Supplies
To refurbish your diving board, you’ll need the following materials:
• Sandpaper (80-grit and 220-grit)
• Weather-resistant primer
• Weather-resistant paint
• Paint brushes or rollers
• Tarp or drop cloth
• Cleaning supplies
• Protective gear (gloves, goggles, mask)
Preparing the Work Area
Set up a well-ventilated workspace, preferably outdoors. Lay down a tarp to protect the surrounding area from paint and debris. If possible, remove the diving board from its mount for easier access during the refurbishment process.
Cleaning and Sanding
Start by thoroughly cleaning the diving board with a mild detergent and water. Once dry, use 80-grit sandpaper to remove any existing paint or rough spots. Follow up with 220-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth.
Applying Primer
Apply a coat of weather-resistant primer using a brush or roller. Ensure even coverage and allow the primer to dry completely, typically 24 hours or as specified by the manufacturer.
Painting the Diving Board
Once the primer is dry, apply a coat of weather-resistant paint suitable for outdoor use. Choose a color that complements your pool area. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a second coat if needed.
Adding a Non-Slip Surface
For safety, consider adding a non-slip texture to the diving board surface. Mix fine-grained sand into the final coat of paint or apply a specialized non-slip coating designed for pool areas.
Finishing Touches
After the paint has fully cured (usually 48-72 hours), inspect the board for any missed spots or imperfections. Touch up as necessary. If you removed the board, carefully reattach it to its mount, ensuring all hardware is secure.

To prolong the life of your refurbished diving board:
• Rinse the board regularly with fresh water
• Avoid using harsh chemicals for cleaning
• Cover the board when not in use to protect it from the elements
