How to Remove Scratches from Stainless Steel Refrigerators

Stainless steel appliances are a popular choice for their sleek, modern look, but they can be prone to scratches and scuffs over time. If you have a scratch on your stainless steel refrigerator, don’t worry – there are several effective methods to remove it and restore the shine.

Assessing the Damage

The first step is to determine the severity of the scratch. Light, fine scratches can often be buffed out using non-abrasive cleaners, while deeper scratches may require more intensive treatment.

Removing Light Scratches

For minor scratches, you can try using a non-abrasive cleaner like Bar Keepers Friend Powdered Cleanser or 3M 36101 Perfect-It Gelcoat Heavy Cutting Compound. Mix the powder with a bit of water to create a paste, then gently rub it into the scratch using a microfiber cloth, following the direction of the grain. Wipe away the residue and check the progress, repeating the process until the scratch is gone.

Another effective option is to use whitening toothpaste. Apply a small amount to a soft-bristled toothbrush and gently scrub the scratch, again following the grain of the stainless steel. Wipe away the toothpaste and check the results.

Removing Deep Scratches

For deeper scratches, you may need to use a slightly more abrasive approach. Start with a fine-grit (400 or higher) wet/dry sandpaper, keeping the area and sandpaper wet throughout the process. Gently sand the scratch, moving back and forth in the direction of the grain. If the scratch persists, try a slightly coarser grit. Once the scratch is gone, use a finer grit to blend the area with the rest of the finish.

After sanding, be sure to wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. Apply a small amount of stainless steel polish or olive oil to help restore the shine.
