If you’re interested in a career as an aircraft mechanic, you may be wondering what kind of training is required. While a college degree is not necessary for this occupation, most aircraft mechanics obtain at least 18 months of training from an FAA-approved aviation maintenance technician school.
Aviation Maintenance Technician Schools (AMTS)
An AMTS is an educational facility certificated by the FAA, under 14 CFR part 147, to train students in the knowledge and skills required for careers in the aviation maintenance industry. These schools offer FAA-approved curriculum that may be used to establish eligibility to test for an Aviation Mechanic certificate with Airframe and/or Powerplant ratings.
Degree Programs
Associate and bachelor’s degree programs are available in disciplines related to aviation technology and management. These programs provide a more comprehensive education, combining technical training with general education courses. However, a degree is not a requirement for becoming an aircraft mechanic.
Practical Experience
In addition to formal training, aircraft mechanics must have practical experience to obtain their FAA certification. This can be achieved through on-the-job training or military experience. The FAA requires at least 18 months of practical experience with the procedures, practices, materials, tools, machines, and equipment generally used in constructing, maintaining, or altering an airframe or powerplant.
Certification Process
To become a certified aircraft mechanic, individuals must pass written, oral, and practical exams administered by the FAA. The knowledge, oral, and practical tests are based on the Aviation Mechanic General, Airframe, and Powerplant Airman Certification Standards.
